Dear Alistair:

Thanks for doing what you did about Scharansky.  In that connection, I have
also turned down a Soviet visitor to our laboratory.  I expect this to
have more effect as a protest against the inactivity of the National Academy
of Science which was sponsoring the visit than I do on the behavior of
the Russians themselves.  Too bad none of us had the energy to
get more signatures on the telegram.
